Dromeosaur Sculpture
Life size Dromeosaurus Albertensis Sculpture, commissioned by the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument in southern Utah for their new visitors center outside of Big Water Utah.
A scale model representation of what the life size sculpture will look like.

The background drawing helps to stay within the dimensions of the object you're trying to make.

Steel piping, in this case conduit, is a good medium to make the internal frame of the sculpture.
The background drawing is also a good reference to use when making the internal frame.

Using a foam core to go over the frame and under the clay is a good way to keep the sculpture light
and save clay.

Adding clay to the foam inner core in the start of roughing out the dimensions of the sculpture.

Putting screws in the steel piping keeps the clay from shifting on the pipe while you work with it.

Before the detail is started the sculptures dimensions should be roughed out then smoothed down.

The detail is an important part of the sculpture but not as important as the form.

The sculpture is done is oil based clay and must be cut into pieces after its done
so it can be molded and cast in a different medium. In this case I cast it in a two part resin.

The molds are silicone with an outer layer of resin to keep the dimensions from shifting while casting.

All pieces are put back together and painted. Sculpture is ready to be installed!
