As part of the new adaptive management plan for the Colorado River through Glen Canyon and Grand Canyon, they try to replicate annual flood cycles that existed on the Colorado before dams were built. These lift sediment from the bottom of the river and build beaches in Grand Canyon essential for native endangered fish to breed on.

Here is a shot of sediment being lifted from the bottom of the river and mixing with what is usually crystal clear water coming from the dam. This was shot just below the dam shortly after they turned on the bypass tubes.
